An perennial ornamental member of the nightshade family, with lush dark green foliage and beautiful purple flowers followed by loads of bright orange fruit. All parts of the plant are poisonous other than the fruit once it is fully orange and ripe. Do not eat when pregnant as the aborigines of Australia used it as an abortive. Also since it is a nightshade eat in small quantities at first to make sure you do not have any sensitivities to it. Best to wait for the fruit to fall off the bush for best flavor and edibility. Fruit is sweet and is used raw or cooked. Can naturalize in some climates. Native to areas of South America, primarily Brazil. Hardy zones 8b-11.
