Gray PIne (Pinus sabiniana)is native to the Sierra foothills and the inland areas of the coast range. Its distinctive and varied shape and long gray needles make it a standout specimen in the landscape. Its huge cones which hang for many years on the tree are packed with very large pine nuts that are very tasty and nutritious and were a staple of the native tribes of the region.The pitch was also used as a medicine. Very drought tolerant, it casts a light shade allowing other plants to be grown in its vicinity. Hardy zones 7b-10.
